#IGPoetSecretSanta ǀ Give the Gift of Poetry

We believe in the power of poetry to surprise and delight. We believe in the magic of poetry. We believe in the power of poetry to surprise and delight. We also believe that poetry should be shared, and shared widely.  This is the essence of the #IGPoetSecretSanta challenge. This week we are asking poets everywhere to write an uplifting, inspiring and positive work and to gift it to a stranger for the holiday season. To participate all you need to do is write a poem that fits the theme, print it on paper and then leave that poem somewhere that it will be found.  This could be on a table at a coffee shop, on a seat on a bus or train, inside the pages of a book or magazine, on the desk of a colleague, or in a neighbors letterbox. Let your creativity guide you! To participate online, take a photo…

Stories to Sip ǀ Getting to Know a Stranger

by Guest Blogger, F.R.M.W ǀ @f.r.m.w I moved back to Los Angeles with the sole purpose of relearning myself and starting over. I’ve always been one to habitually distance myself when I was going through anything personal. I had an epiphany at a funeral in February; I realized I was unsatisfied, unhappy, and I needed change. A couple months later, in early June, I moved back to Los Angeles with the sole purpose of relearning myself and starting over. I packed up my mere belongings, which intangibly included the severed ties from an abrupt breakup and the constant reminder of mortality that came with spiraling health conditions. I became self-absorbed. I knew I had to change that mindset, but I didn’t know how. All I knew was I didn’t want any of my friends or family to see me like this; so I spent as much time possible alone. I found comfort…

Her Heart’s Guide to a Great Instagram Poetry Account

On our journey through the Instapoet community we have seen some of the best Instagram poetry accounts on offer. With our suitcase of stanzas packed to the brim here are our top 10 tips for creating a great Instagram poetry account: 1. Find your authentic voice It has been our experience that the accounts that do well, and this is both in terms of follower numbers and engagement, are those that are written with an authentic voice. It is clear from the work that the poet knows who they are and what they represent. They have a point of view and this makes them stand out from the crowd. Begin your journey by finding your authentic voice. 2. Create a Style and Theme The accounts that stay with us are normally those that have a consistent theme and a signature style. It might be a style of font, a series of…

Her Heart Measures up the Micropoetry and Flash Fiction Revolution

Atticus, Poindexter, Rupi Kaur, JmStorm… To anyone who doesn’t live in the land of Instapoetry, these names won’t mean very much. However, for those in the know, these are just four poets who have made a reputation, and a living, off their work and loyal Instagram following. The other thing that these poets have in common is that they specialise in micropoetry and flash fiction. By it’s very nature Instagram is a platform that supports brevity. Swiping does not a lot of time take. In order to make a connection, a poem often needs to be able to be read almost instantaneously and this does not lend itself to a lengthy work. Micropoetry and Flash Fiction are defined by their extreme brevity. A micropoem is simply a short poem. Flash fiction is an umbrella term used to describe the extremely short work. Beginning with the increasingly popular One-Word story,…
