In 2017, Her Heart Poetry is fortunate to have, J. M. Storm ǀ @jmstormquotes, as Head Judge for the inaugural Her Heart Poetry International Micropoetry Prize. Mr Storm will make the final decision on the winner and those deemed to be Highly Commended and eligible for publication in the THE ANNUAL ǀ 2017 anthology.
Below, we introduce our Head Judge and give an overview of the judging criteria.
A word with J. M. Storm,
I was born in the south and I grew up being a hands on guy. Whether it was taking something apart to hear it whisper the secrets of how it worked, to all night fishing trips with my brother and friends.
There were dares and there were test, like boys did back then. So eager to be a man. So eager to prove it. So needing to believe it.
But through it all, it always seemed that I felt things more than others. Not like a sixth sense, but maybe, deeper or clearer. The truth is, everything had a feeling associated with it.
Writer. That was hard to say about myself because it wasn’t something I’d really considered. It wasn’t something that I had long aspired to be and not a dream. I was surprised as anyone and even now, sometimes, it’s still hard to wrap my head around.
Even now I think of myself as writer secondary. Or as I have been known to say, I’ve always felt. It’s just one day I found the ability to translate it into words.
An overview of the judging criteria:
The most critical aspect of this competition is an understanding that it is focused on micropoetry. All poems should be written in this spirit. Although the poet has up to 14 lines, this is not an exercise is seeing how many words will fit into those 14 lines and we expect that most poems will be shorter than 14 lines.
The judging panel and Head Judge will be looking for concise work that has excellent construction, with clear thought given to word selection, word interplay and imagery. Works that subvert the ordinary and present an interesting or unique perspective and ultimately make the reader feel or experience. The panel will also be looking for work that is of a very high standard and work should be free of unintentional grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
Poems must be the original work of the entrant, previously unpublished, and not submitted elsewhere. Poems must be no more than 14 lines in length and entrants should ensure that the entry can fit on a single square Instagram post without the need for the caption.
Entries must be typed, double-spaced, and any style or subject will be considered. Each entry must be on a separate page. The poet’s name must not appear on the typescript. No images will be accepted.
Please use Word or equivalent to write your entry and double space each line. Write it as you wish it be published (particularly if the form is important in the reading). Do NOT put your name or account handle on your submission. Each poem should also be on a separate page.
Entries must be written in English.
The submissions portal will open on 1 February 2017 and can be found HERE from the opening date.
